Course Introduction:
The intent of this course is to provide students with a better understanding of the world, their place in the world and their responsibility as citizens and leaders within their local and global community. The focus is to encourage students to become active leaders who engage in their communities through thoughtful and meaningful activities and initiatives. The model of leadership taught will be servant leadership based upon the work of Robert Greenleaf. In this class, we will also emphasize the social and emotional learning model from various researchers including Daniel Goleman, Howard Gardner and other current specialists in this field.
The Global Initiatives and Leadership course is a hands on experiential course. Students will be encouraged to identify, develop and refine their own positive leadership styles through student led initiatives that focus on bringing about positive change within their communities either locally or globally. The model of instruction mostly used is an inquiry based model where students are lead to ask themselves “bigger questions” and act on them in a positive way. In addition to this, student’s will be given the opportunity to take their learning a step further and add the Global component onto their learning and participate in a Global leadership initiative. Hands on practical skills will be included in this program such as house building, fundraising, language skills and research. Each year we as a class travel to a different destination to take on a service learning project which tends to tie together all learning that has taken place in the classroom.

In this course, students will be expected to use the servant as leader model to:
Planning to Plan
- Students will understand how self awareness relates to leadership
- Students will set goals in relation to various initiatives
- Students will develop foresight and practice initiative
- Students will be practice conceptualization and active problem solving in the context of leadership
Communication and Presentation
- Effective listening skills
- Students will learn to write proposals
- Students will use multimedia to enhance communication during leadership practicum’s
- Effective presentation skills
- Act in Persuasive manners to help foster kindness, compassion,
Organization
- Learning about and working towards building community both globally and locally
- Student will use timelines to help organize various initiatives
Interpersonal
- Practicing humility “servant as leader model”
- Engage in Stewardship
- Demonstrate a commitment to the growth of others
- Apply conflict resolution and an understanding of rescue dynamics
Critical thinking/Critical Skill
- Students will immerse themselves in the language, culture, geography of the places that we visit
- Think deeply about the issues effecting the communities that we are acting as servant leaders in
- Develop skills needed to become servant leaders ie) Carpentry, language, teaching
Key Learning/Instructional strategies
- An inquiry based model will be used in this course driven mostly by the Socratic Dialogue model.
- Jigsaw, think pair share, 5 and 1, journaling, academic debate are some of the teaching/learning methods used under the pretext of a cooperative learning environment
- Use of “class agreements”
Leadership Initiatives
Students will be required in this course to undertake at least 2 major initiatives that contribute positively to their growth of their communities and demonstrate a clear understanding of the servant as leader model
School Based Leadership Initiative
Leadership practicum examples include anti bullying campaign, peer to peer support, teacher support, positive communication, researching and addressing elements that contribute to a safe and caring learning community
Community Based Leadership Initiative
Leadership practicum examples anti graffiti campaign, homeless awareness, food drives, clothing drives, support of local charities
Global Leadership Initiative
Leadership practicum includes researching and acting on causes of poverty, homelessness, social and racial injustice, supporting global educational initiative
Assessment
Assessment used in this class will be based on assessment for, of, and as learning principles. Assessment of learning will be authentic and will take place during execution of student driven initiatives and leadership activities. (For example, student building a house in completion) The servant as leader 10 point model will also be used extensively for the purposes of initiative and leadership projects
Assignments
Journaling
- Each student will be required to teach/lead a topic in this course. The teaching component will be for a minimum of 15 minutes and will take place in groups of either 3 – 4 students. Student’s are encouraged to practice speaking in front of other students in an interesting and interactive format. Topics for this assignment will be given after the first term. (15% of mark)
RAK (Random Act of Kindness) – All student’s will be required to practice at least three RAK throughout the year in addition to their service activities. Student’s mark will base by self assessment. (15% of mark)
Social Justice Issues - Global Education students will be assessed for their learning in current Global issues as well as social justice issues. A final exam will be written at the end of the year based on this component. Student’s will be asked to write their own final exams based on information that they have researched and learned about throughout the course. (30% of mark)
Initiatives: Students will also be required to organize and carry out several initiatives throughout the year. Student’s will be graded using the Servant as leader model scale based on Robert Greenleaf’s model. (25% of mark)
